How to Clean a Wood Cutting Board

Wood cutting board can be made from maple, cherry, oak, walnut, or other hardwood with a dense grain pattern.

Wooden boards can be a great way to chop and slice vegetables for dinner or to prepare food for a party.

While hardwood cutting boards are beautiful, they are more expensive than their softer counterparts. If you have the money to burn, go for it!

If you’re on a budget, start looking for cutting boards made from softer hardwoods or plastic. You can also use a corian cutting board or even a bamboo cutting board.

It does not matter what material you choose for a cutting board, as long as it is properly maintained. Remember that accidents do happen, and boards can get nicked or cut. Be sure to replace your cutting board if it gets too deep of a cut for food safety reasons.

No matter what material your cutting board is made from, be sure to keep it clean. Wash it with hot, soapy water after each use and dry it off completely. If you’re using a wood cutting board, you can also give it a light sanding to remove any food residue and dried-on juices.

This is also something to keep in mind when you are looking for a new cutting board. Softwoods like pine or fir will become stained over time, and no amount of sanding will remove the dye. If you’re worried about staining, opt for a hardwood instead.

How to Clean a Wood Cutting Board

Dish soap:

For light colored wood, clean the board with cool water and soap, then rub it dry with a paper towel or dishcloth. You can also use hydrogen peroxide if the stain does not seem to want to come out.

For darker wood, water alone may not be enough to remove all of the stains that have accumulated over time. Luckily, there are more than a few chemical-free ways to remove stubborn food stains from wood boards.

Salt and lemon:

Rub the lemon half all over the surface of the cutting board, then sprinkle with salt. Use in circular motion to work the lemon and salt into the wood. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes, then rinse with hot water and dry.

White vinegar:

Pour white vinegar over the surface of the cutting board, then let it sit for 10 minutes. Dip a clean cloth into some cool water, wring out any excess liquid, and use it to wipe the vinegar off of the cutting board. Rinse with hot water and dry.

Baking soda:

Sprinkle baking soda over the surface of the cutting board, then use a damp cloth or sponge to scrub. Rinse with cool water and dry thoroughly.

Hydrogen peroxide:

Pour hydrogen peroxide over the surface of the cutting board, then let it sit for a few minutes. Dip a clean cloth into some cool water, wring out any excess liquid, and use it to wipe the hydrogen peroxide off of the cutting board. Rinse with hot water and dry.

Bleach:

If this fails to remove the stain, try soaking the board in a mixture of water and bleach. If you do choose to use a bleach mixture, be sure to thoroughly rinse the cutting board with water afterwards. Bleach can discolor your wood or damage the finish, so be careful!

You can also try mixing one part hydrogen peroxide with three parts water, then wiping the boards down with a cloth.

As you can see, there are many different ways to clean a wood cutting board. The best way to find out which one will work the best for you is to try a few of them and see which one works the best. Be sure to rinse and dry the cutting board completely after each cleaning method.

How to maintain your wood cutting board
